Tokaj Wine Region celebrates debut in Washington D.C.

After participating at the 11th Annual Washington D.C. Wine and Food Festival and before leaving for New York to attend the 3rd Annual Wine Expo, the Tokaj Reneszánsz Egyesület (Tokaj Renaissance Association) in cooperation with the Embassy introduced the Tokaj region and its delicious wines at the Hungarian Embassy.

An Open House Wine Tasting was organized for wine professionals who had the opportunity to try great wines from several Tokaj wineries as well as get information about their history and production. Ms. Rita Rakaczki, Director of the Tokaj Renaissance Association, Ms. Izabella Zwack, Owner of Dobogó Winery, and Mr. László Mészáros, Director of the Disznókő Winery answered questions and provided interesting details about these wines.

A large selection of Tokaj wines, from the up and coming Furmint to the well known Aszú were presented. Tokaji Aszú is a unique Hungarian sweet wine with a high concentration of sugar made from hand-selected shriveled berries that were affected by Botrytis cinerea, macerated in wine or grape juice before pressing, and matured at least two years in oak and one year in bottle. Wine experts at the tasting agreed that dry Furmint are likely to be a new hit on the US market.
